Carnie Woods – call for volunteers to help with increasing the survival rate of newly planted saplings

Weeds steal nutrients and water from the soil around newly planted saplings. Over 6,000 saplings were planted at Carnie Woods a few months ago, and some are facing strong competition, particularly from couch grass, a shallow rooted, but notoriously tough weed to eradicate.

The Community Council organised three short weeding sessions over the last week with support from a number of volunteers, but we can always do with more. Two more sessions are planned in the next few days, one on this coming Saturday, 27th at 2.15, and the other on Wednesday, 31st at 10am. The sessions will run for around an hour and a half, or as long as you like, starting from Carnie Crescent car park entrance [beside the fenced football pitch].

If you would like to join us, please bring a tyned hoe – something like this one,   although a long handled version would save a lot of bending/kneeling. Please also bring gloves, water and a sense of humour. Thank you

Your Community Council – Getting Involved

This is a reminder that the closing date for Nomination forms for the WECC Election is 18th May 2023.

The current Westhill and Elrick Community Council were elected in 2020.   All Community Councils require to be re-elected every 3 years so an election is being held for Westhill and Elrick in May this year. There are 17 vacancies.

If you care about your community and want to make it a better place to live, this is the role for you!

The main role of the Community Council is to let Aberdeenshire Council and other public bodies know the view of their community. We also organise many community improvement activities, like litter picking, Xmas lights, Westhill Bulletin, Westhill Orbital Trail, hanging baskets & flower tubs

The self-nomination form can be downloaded from link below or by emailing the WECC secretary at weccsecretx@gmail.com.

Paper copies can be picked up from Westhill Library or from Storie Cruden & Simpson at the Shopping Centre.

The form shows 3 options for eligibility criteria, tick the most appropriate one. For most people it will be the first one (I am on the Electoral Register and I reside in the area of the Community Council).  The form asks for your electoral number, but this can be left blank if not known.

Nomination forms need to be received by 18th May 2023.They should be emailed to Garioch@aberdeenshire.gov.uk or posted to Alison Cumming, Garioch Area Office, Gordon House, Inverurie, AB51 3WA

If there is more than 17 nomination forms received, a public ballot will be held on Monday 29th May in Ashdale Hall, Westhill from 6pm to 8pm.   The ballot will be advertised in the press and at http://www.westhillelrick.org

If you would like to find out more about the role of a Community Councillor, please call Alison Cumming at the Garioch Area Office on 01467 530796. Alternatively email Alison.cumming@aberdeenshire.gov.uk
